How Much Skin Care is Too Much?

We all want healthy skin, and many of us already have a daily routine for taking care of our biggest organ. However, some of us may be overdoing it and causing more harm than good. The begs the question, how much skin care is too much? Most advice regarding skin care tips for men fails to cover this common problem.

Simply, when you start to notice damage to your skin, you’re likely already at the point of using too many products. Today, we will take a look at the impacts of using too many skin care products, the steps you can use to correct and avoid skin damage, and how to establish a skin care routine. For more helpful tips like these, check out some of the other posts on the Dr. Squatch blog.

The Effects of Using Too Many Skin Products

The purpose of using skin care products is to improve the quality of our skin, but like many things in life, using too many products or misusing them can lead to skin damage. Below are some of the effects of overuse of skin care products.

Tightness – Have you used facial cleansers or other skin care products that made your skin actually feel tighter? This is likely because your products are not pH balanced and are doing more harm than good.

Acne – A common problem associated with too much product use is acne. This can be caused due to the chemicals in your products causing an allergic reaction or clogging up your pores and causing pimples. It ends up being a vicious cycle because you’re using products to try and improve your skin, and then you have to use other treatments to clear your pimples.

Hyperpigmentation – If you are noticing changes in your skin coloring such as blotchiness or dark spots, it may be due to your skincare routine. Sometimes hyperpigmentation can be an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis caused by the ingredients in skin care products.

Flaky Skin – If you’re finding that your skin is particularly dry and flaky, it may be a sign that you’re overdoing it. This can be as a result of the type of products used, the strength of products used, or by using too much of a particular product.

Skin Irritation – If you’re finding that your skin is regularly red and inflamed, then it may be time to change your routine. Skin irritation can range from mild redness to chemical burns. Some may even mistake skin irritation as a more serious skin condition when it may just be the result of their skincare routine.

Correcting and Avoiding Damage From Skin Care Products

If you are experiencing any of the problems listed above, it is time to take some steps to avoid future problems. Start by avoiding your present products for two to three days to allow the damage to your skin time to recover. If the damage requires the attention of a doctor or dermatologist, address this before resuming your skincare routine.

Once you have your problems resolved, consider making some of the following changes to help avoid future problems.

Switch to Natural Soap – The first step in any skincare routine is your soap. Most commercial soaps contain chemicals that can cause many of the problems listed earlier. Consider switching to a natural soap like those at Dr. Squatch. These soaps are pH balanced and contain natural ingredients, not harsh chemicals that damage your skin.

Switch to Natural Cologne and Beard Oils – Like soap, standard colognes and beard oils have chemicals that can damage or even burn your skin. Switching to natural colognes and beard oils like Dr. Squatch products can help protect your skin.

Switch or Reduce Moisturizer Strength – If you still find a need to use a moisturizer after moving to more natural soaps, then a good first step is finding a moisturizer that has natural ingredients. For those who prefer a particular moisturizer brand, see if there is a way to reduce the strength. If you’re using maximum strength moisturizer, dial it back to the standard product. This will typically reduce the amount of chemicals going on your skin.

Resume Slowly – When resuming your skin care routine, start slowly by adding one item to your skincare routine. Don’t go back to using all your products at once. Start with one product and use it exclusively for a couple of days to see how well your skin tolerates it and then apply the next. Continue this process as appropriate.

Create a Healthy Skin Care Routine

One of the best ways to prevent skin problems is by developing a skin care routine and evaluating as necessary. Today, we will give you a routine that will help keep your skin looking its best. Plus, it will also help you avoid many of the problems listed above.

Get Sufficient Sleep – While we have primarily talked about skin care products, one change you can make that doesn’t require any product application is getting more sleep. When you do not get sufficient rest, it has an impact on the quality of your skin.

Sleep helps our body to recharge and repair from the previous day. When you don’t get enough sleep, you can start to see the results in your skin, particularly from the dark bags and circles around your eyes. You may also find your skin to be paler, and that irritations may take longer to heal.

Bathe With Natural Products – We already mentioned that you should consider switching to natural soaps. Additionally, consider using natural shampoo and moisturizer for your hair and scalp. You should only use shampoo about two to three times a week and use moisturizer for the other times.

Natural shampoos and conditioners can help to prevent dryness, flakiness, and skin irritation of the head and scalp. Natural soaps also contain glycerin, which helps to retain moisture and natural oils in your skin. This means you will use less moisturizer if any at all.

Only Use Moisturizer as Needed – If you are using natural soaps, shampoos, and shaving products, then you may find less of a need to use a moisturizer. Some people automatically apply moisturizer as a preventative measure, and this may be doing more harm than good. If you find that moisturizer is necessary, then use a more natural moisturizer.

Regularly Evaluate Your Results – It is a good idea to periodically check your skin for any breakouts or irritation caused by your skin care products. Don’t limit your check to your face and neck but check all parts of your body. You may find that your products are causing skin irritation or breakouts to other parts of your body and not your face. If you notice any changes to any parts of your skin, immediately consider doing a reset like mentioned above. Change products when necessary to help improve the quality of your skin.

Consult a Dermatologist When Necessary – Should you find that you are having problems with skin irritation regardless of the changes you’ve made to your skin care routine, then it may be a good idea to consult with a dermatologist about your experiences. You may have a skin condition or allergy that needs to be identified. They can help you pinpoint exactly what’s causing the problem, thus giving you the tools necessary to avoid problems in the future.

Your skin is the biggest organ on your body, and it is important that you take the step necessary to take care of it. By following the above skin care tips for men, you should see an improvement in the quality of your skin, allowing you to put your “best face forward” in all of your daily activities.
